It’s coming on Christmas, they’re cutting down trees, putting up reindeer and singing songs of joy and peace.
I enjoy many of the same things as menopausal women, but chief among them is Joni Mitchell. Have you noticed if a moviemaker wants to make a female character seem emotional and vulnerable they’ll just chuck in a reference to Joni? It’s emo for the middle-aged. Meg Ryan, Annette Bening and Natasha Richardson all namecheck the somber singer-songwriter in films where they’re being cheated on or going broke or something equally depressing and distressing. Mindy Kaling recently tweeted that she drives around in her car listening to “River” on repeat at this time of year to pretend that she’s a sad movie heroine.
I couldn’t sleep earlier tonight, so after tossing and turning for half an hour I got up and put on this song and stalked some more people on Facebook. Coincidentally, Justin sent me a link to James Blake’s cover of Joni’s “A Case Of You”, which is also from the Blue album. I thought that was too weird to NOT write a blog post about. We talked about how sad Blue is and how cool it is when girls like Joni M. I’m not fussy and I only have 4 criteria for my future wife: 1) She must be really pretty 2) She must be really smart 3) She must have really low self-esteem (makes it easier to manipulate her into things) and 4) She must be a really big Joni Mitchell fan.
Ladies, listen to this song and you could end up marrying me! Or, you could turn out to be the sad heroine in the movie version of your life. But I guess doing the former would definitely guarantee the latter. Zing!
